Cobble and Hooves

"Clack, clack, clack," as I hear the the boney hooves tapping on the rock-strewn
pavement. The horses neigh reverberate along the avenues as they pull in the Calesas. The lively murmurs of crowds, chatting to decide their destination. If you'd ask me where I stood, I'd say this is just another day parading through the timeless streets of Vigan City.
A treasured city tucked away in the heart of the Northern Philippines, renowned for its spanish-colonial times architecture dashed with a handful of Chinese-style construction. As the modern era continues to take over, the unforgettable heritage and culture of colonial times still runs through its trenched canal veins.

In its time of birth, initially founded by Juan de Salcedo, a spanish conquistador during 1572. He named the land, Ciudad Fernandina, a way of honoring a spanish king, King Ferdinand II Of Aragon. The stage was set, the geographic location recognized as an asset as the Mestizo river ran through by it, the tradesmen starred as the actors and the Biray (carrier ships for goods) were initialized to be the costume and props. Trades left and right, products continuously running through the market and Ciudad Fernandina suddenly became a crux for trade and commerce.
As the sands of time continues to run through Ciudad Fernandina, the honor of becoming a city was granted after the bygone of a few centuries. Queen Isabella II declared the settlement as a city in the Philippines, just after Cebu and Manila.

Now known as Vigan City, economic standpoint of the city marked a time for transition, as UNESCO declared the city as a World Heritage Site. Showing appreciation and commendation for its well-preserved culture and the Spaniard structures. The city only continued to flourish, after more than Four centuries, nurturing its economy, it has now become one of the most significant Cities in the country
At present, Vigan is now one of the most tourist populated spots not only in our country but also our world throughout. Celebrated by travellers of diverse roots. Cobbled streets, centuries-old buildings out of bricks, lime and wood and the townsfolk who inherited values passed down from their colonial times ancestors.

Woven from the souls of various cultures, this city stands not only for its aesthetic value but also its contribution towards Philippines' economic development and  maintenance of the remnants of a cobbly town. Truly one of the pride and joys of the north, an eternal tapestry forever remembered by succeeding generations.
