Indigenous roots we must preserve, culture we must protect

As we approach October, this marks the celebration of Indigenous Peoples Month and the 27th anniversary of the Indigenous Peoples Rights Act (IPRA), with the theme “Mga Katutubo at Katutubong Dunong: Pahalagahan, Pangalagaan at Parangalan. This month-long celebration emphasizes the importance of recognizing and protecting the rights and culture of Indigenous Peoples to Filipino society. Further signifying respect we must have to the highly valuable contributions Indigenous people have. Knowledge and wisdom passed down traditionally, cuisines and the arts as well as old folk languages that cannot be found anywhere else.

The Indigenous Peoples Rights Act of 1997 was a law implemented that safeguarded the rights of Indigenous People to their land, human rights and cultural integrity. Over the past 27 years, IPRA has played a crucial role in giving recognition to Indigenous communities and empowering them to preserve their traditions and practices. The theme for this month reminds us that protection, giving respect and understanding Indigenous people's knowledge is essential in sustaining their unique heritage. National Indigenous Peoples Month promotes cultural preservation through that celebrate Indigenous art, music, dance, cuisine, languages , knowledge and rituals. It also provides a platform for addressing issues faced by IP communities, such as land encroachment, discrimination, and lack of access to education and healthcare.

By honoring their wisdom and advocating for their rights, the month of October ensures that Indigenous Peoples are not left behind in the country’s development. As we celebrate their contributions, let us also commit to nurturing their cukture and protecting their rights for future generations to come in our own Filipino history. So as part of the Filipino community, we must all unite as one to preserve the significant ancestral history of the Philippine's indigenous tribes, connecting where the roots from where we came.
